Melanie Lane Bridge Replacement

East Hanover Township, Morris County, NJ

Provided professional engineering, surveying, and construction administration services for the replacement of the Melanie Lane Bridge over the Whippany River in the Township of East Hanover. The existing bridge structure was a 100’ long, open-grate, two-span steel bridge that was failing from ongoing corrosion and needed to be closed to vehicular traffic. Hydraulic analysis allowed the new replacement bridge to be an 84’ single-span structure, avoiding the need for a replacement pier support in the river. The design was fast-tracked, as the existing bridge was already out of commission prior to the start of design.

The project scope included pre-stressed adjacent box beams, abutments, wingwalls, extensive utility coordination, ROW takings, and historic fill considerations. This bridge was a Township-owned bridge that will be accepted by Morris County into its own bridge inventory. We worked closely with the Township and County to verify design and construction was in conformance with NJDOT and Morris County design standard and specifications. This bridge was partially funded by NJDOT Local Aid.
