Six Flags Great Adventure – Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom

Jackson Township, Ocean County, NJ

In order to add the Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom ride to the face of the Kingda Ka roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure, Colliers Engineering & Design’s professionals provided structural engineering, civil/site engineering, permitting, land survey, and construction stakeout services for the construction of new footings and support beams to reinforce the tower structure of the Kingda Ka ride. Zumanjaro is currently the tallest drop ride in the world at 415 vertical ft. The drop ride tracks are attached to the face of the existing steel tower that supports the vertical loop of the Kingda Ka roller coaster, an innovative design solution that creates two rides within a single space.

Colliers Engineering & Design’s structural engineers analyzed the loads from the new required columns and structures to develop a final design that allowed the new footings to fit within and on top of the existing tower footings, while staying within the limits of the site’s soil properties and applicable ride and building codes. The project also included close coordination with Six Flags planners to design a walkway leading to the ride, attracting patrons from the park’s midway and funneling them into queues. A portion of this walkway is covered by a long protective structure to shield riders waiting in line. This queue structure design includes a pneumatically-powered retractable roof structure that is synched to the ride.
